Return of Chandu

Am hoping somebody here can steer me in the right direction. I'm researching the Chandu radio show for a BLOOD 'N' THUNDER article on RETURN OF CHANDU and am having a devil of a time finding accurate,...

Re: Return of Chandu

The absence of a reference on the poster to a particular chapter, or even "a serial in 12 chapters", makes me wonder if this might be a poster for use with the first feature version, also called...

Re: Return of Chandu

Hard to guess; it could even have designed support either version, or the feature followed by chapters format that Lesser offered. (If memory serves.) If the 'facts' that RiddleRider has knows for...

Re: Return of Chandu

I've tried several times to get through RETURN OF CHANDU, but have never gotten very far before it knocked me dead asleep.  This despite the presence of Bela, the Skull Island wall, complete with...

Re: Return of Chandu

Don't feel bad, David; you're not the only one that has found RETURN OF CHANDU to be tough-going (even when looking at a fairly decent print).  I got through it in one wintery weekend, and came away a...

Re: Return of Chandu

I did virtually the same thing CreepingBride described, watching a little at a time; in my case, about one episode before going to work in the morning. It has flaws, all right, but I thought the...

RiddleRider wrote:For the record: I supplied VCI with the master for their RETURN OF CHANDU DVD. I transferred a very battered 35mm nitrate print, very likely the only one that still survives. I spent...

Re: Return of Chandu

I'd rather watch a slightly scratched and spliced (the way an average 16mm TV print might look) copy of a good film than a beautiful 35mm transfer of a bomb.

Re: Return of Chandu

True, hb - but if it's only an "Eh" flick, not a full-out Bomb, a great print helps a lot.

Re: Return of Chandu

Despite all the wonderful elements in the serial, it is really a chore to get through. I like the movie CHANDU THE MAGICIAN (1932) with Edmond Lowe as Chandu and Lugosi as Roxor much, much better.

I was just re-reading this thread, and nearly 4 years ago (!) I wrote that I was making a New Year's Resolution to watch this serial for the first time. After the first 2 chapters in 2007, I never...

Re: Return of Chandu

I haven't seen a whole lot of serials but I liked THE RETURN OF CHANDU pretty well. Certainly there was some padding; I watched one chapter a day though rather than back to back though and that seemed...

Re: Return of Chandu

If you can't get through the serial, try CHANDU ON THE MAGIC ISLE, the feature from the second half of the seriea. I have a lot of fun with Lugosi as the hero running around Bronson Canyon.

Re: Return of Chandu

Just finished watcing RETURN OF CHANDU (from the Alpha DVD) - strange to see Lugosi in a romantic/heroic role, but he does a good job. Alpha's 2 volume release DVD has lots of audio and visual issues,...

If you don't like serials in general, you will hate PHANTOM CREEPS. Even with Bela, it's a total mess.

Re: Return of Chandu

I saw PHANTOM CREEPS a few years ago. It's far better than Chandu (it's Universal, Bela is mad doctor, giant robot, invisibility). The Alpha DVD has a terrible quality transfer. Wasn't there supposed...
